Constructive Triangle Boxes

Materials

Preparation

This is an individual exercise, which is done on a floor mat on the floor. (Note: work cycle to be observed).

Presentation

  1. The Directress shows the child how to take any one of the box individually to the floor mat. she sits beside the child and places the box of shapes in front of the child. Directress shows how to lay out all the contents on the mat.
  2. Box 1 -Trace the lines on the shapes with fingers> Join up the triangles along the line. Then, use the gray triangle as control of error by holding it just above all the shapes made earlier, (not touching) in turn.
  3. The Directress then invites the child to put the shapes together, matching the black lines. the resulting shapes are discussed and named.
  4. Directress may use the Three Period lesson to teach the child the name of the shapes that could be formed with the various shapes, for e.g. hexagon, triangle, rhombus,...etc)

Control Of Error

In boxes 1 to 4 there are black lines on the edges of the triangles to be joined to make different shapes, thus providing guidelines and control for the child.
The shapes of the boxes (triangular, hexagonal and rectangular) also act as a control of error.

Points Of Interest

This is a sensorial exercise and is purely for the child to experience, discover and observe how different geometric shapes can be divided and combined.

Purpose

  • Provide the child the opportunity to experiment with the various geometric shapes and discover, at a sensorial level, the various ways these shapes can be divided and combined to form other shapes.
  • Indirectly prepare the child for later study of geometry by giving the child visual and muscular experience of shapes.
  • Develop the child's vocabulary.


Variation

The child may select any one of the five boxes, construct shapes and discover properties.
