Materials

  • Red fraction circles in green frames (ten circles: 1 is undivided and the others are divided into 2 -10 equal parts.
  • Label with fractions written on them: 1, 1/2, 1/2, 1/3
  • Pencil and paper
  • Skittles

Preparation

This is an individual presentation.

Presentation

  1. Directress asks the child to bring over the first tray of fractions.
  2. Tell the child that "a fraction is dividing a whole into equal parts".
  3. Directress takes out the first circle and place it in front on the tray.
  4. Take out 1/2 and place it in front of the tray.
  5. Take out 1/3 and place it in front of the tray.
  6. Show the child how to carefully replace each fraction back into its spot.
  7. Do this for 1/4, and 1/5. Have the child replace each one back into its spot.
  8. Repeat a few times, mixing up the parts and having the child replace them in their correct spot.
  9. Once the child is comfortable with the first tray, have the child replace it back on the shelf and take out the second tray.
  10. Have the child explore this tray as with the first tray.
  11. Once the child is familiar with the second tray, use the two trays and repeat as above.

Control Of Error

The Directress.
