  • Box of colored bead bars 1-10
  • One each of the squares of 1-10
  • Rubber bands

Preparation


Presentation

  1. The directress volunteers to assist in constructing a square of 9 from a square of 5.
  2. Directress says: "What is the difference when you take 5 from 9? "
  3. So, how many more bars of 5 must be added to this side to make 9?"
  4. Four bars of 5 are added to the right side.
  5. In the same way 4 5-bars are added to the bottom.
  6. Again, there is a hole.
  7. Count the number of beads on the sides of the hole...4 by 4.
  8. Four 4-bars can be replaced by the square,
  9. Use the square of 9 to control:
  10. 5 x 5 + 5 x 4 + 5 x 4 + 4 x 4
