Materials

  • Units Stamps
  • Tens Stamps
  • Hundreds Stamps
  • Thousands Stamps
  • Small Numerals set
  • Paper
  • Colored Pencils (red, blue and green)


Preparation

The student needs to have worked with the golden bead material in the basic operations.

Presentation

1. Have small numerals laid out on rug on upper left side and felt on rug to the right.

2. Bring introduction tray for golden bead material to rug.

3. Take beads and numerals and say to child as you lay them on the felt:

  • "This is 1 unit."             "This says 1 unit."
  • "This is 1 ten."              "This says 1 ten."
  • "This is 1 hundred."    "This says 1 hundred."
  • "This is 1 thousand."   "This says 1 thousand."

4. Place the stamps fore each category below the felt. Tell child, "We can use these stamps in place of the beads."

5. Take stamps in you hand.

6. "I'm going to replace the golden bead with this disc."

  • "This stands for the units place."
  • "This stands for the tens place."
  • "This stands for the hundreds place."
  • "This stands for the thousands place."

7. Move Stamp Game tray in front of child and say:

  • "I'm going to tell you how many stamps to put out."
  • "Let's put out 3 thousands."
    • "1 thousand"
    • "2 thousands"
    • "3 thousands"
  • "Let's put out 2 hundreds."
    • "1 hundred"
    • "2 hundreds"
  • "Let's put out 4 tens."
    • "1 ten"
    • "2 tens"
    • "3 tens"
    • "4 tens"
  • "Let's put out 5 units."
    • "1 unit"
    • "2 units"
    • "3 units"
    • "4 units"
    • "5 units"

8. Pick stamps up and put them away.

9. "Let's do that again."

Repeat several times.

10. "You are getting so good at this that we are going to get the numerals that tell us how many stamps we have."

11. "How many thousands do we have?"

Get the 3 thousands numeral and put it down above the stamp and remove the stamp."

12. "How many hundreds?" Etc. Repeat process.
