Materials

  1. Subtraction Chart A, a chart giving positive results only for numbers 1 to 18, taking away numbers 1 to 9.
  2. Slips on which are written all the subtraction combinations of 1 to 18.


Preparation


Presentation

  1. Directress shows the child how to use the Chart A.
  2. She takes out a slip, e.g. 9-3. First, find 9 on the top of the chart, and then find -3 on the right hand side.
  3. Place two fingers on the two numbers and move the fingers, sliding down and along until they meet 6.
  4. Record the answer.
  5. The child continues in this manner for all the slips.


Control Of Error

The structure of the chart provides the child with the correct answer.

  • To help the child learn and remember the subtraction tables up to 18.
