Materials

  1. One set of Short Bead Stair.
  2. Work cards for the child to complete with Subtraction Tables up to 9.
  3. Subtraction Summary Tables.

Preparation

Presentation

  1. Directress invites the child to build a triangle with the Short Bead Stair.
  2. Directress reads the first example on the work card, e.g. 9-3.
  3. Directress selects the 9 Bead Bar and then counts 3 beads from the right end.
  4. Cover the 3 beads and count the remainder left uncovered.
  5. Explain that 9-3=6.
  6. Directress then shows the child how to record the answer on the answer square.

Control Of Error

  1. The Short Bead Stair acts as a control of error because the quantities are fixed.
  2. The Summary of Subtraction tables makes it possible for the child to correct his own work.
