Materials

  1. 2 Sets of Short Bead stairs.
  2. Summary of Addition tables.
  3. Work Cards with various addition combinations up to 18.
  4. A felt mat for table work.


Preparation


Presentation

  1. Directress lays out the Operational mat on the table.
  2. The Directress gives the child an addition table, e.g. 7 .
  3. Directress invites the child to build two triangles with 2 sets of Short Bead Stair.
  4. Directress shows the child how to work through a table based on the work card given, starting from 7 1, 7 2, ... and so on.
  5. Directress takes the bead 7 from the left hand triangle and then takes 1 bead from the right hand.
  6. Place it together and then count the total number of beads.
  7. Show the child how to record the answer.
  8. Directress then proceeds to 7 2 and so on until 7 9.
  9. Then the child may check with the Addition Tables.


Control Of Error

  1. The Short Bead Stair acts as control of error because the quantities are fixed.
  2. The Summary of Addition Tables makes it possible for the child to correct his own work.


Points Of Interest


Purpose

  • To give the child practice with number bonds with concrete materials and practice in recording.
