Age

3-6

Materials

  • Six pink sentence strips. Each sentence strip has a picture on the left and three-letter phonic words and sight words are used. Capitals and punctuation is introduced.

Preparation

Example phrases:
"The sun is hot", "The red fox hid in the hut".
This is an individual presentation (Note: full work cycle to be observed).

Presentation

  1. The Directress selects one strip and places it in front of the child.
  2. She points to the first word and reminds the child about the sight word he has done.
  3. The Directress then explains about capital letters and full stop, "A sentence always begins with a capital letter and ends with a full-stop".
  4. Encourage the child to read the whole sentence, blending the sounds for unfamiliar words.
  5. Reread the whole sentence for fluency and meaning.
  6. The child may read another strip if he wants to.

Control Of Error

Points Of Interest

If the child does not recognize a word, encourage the child to say the individual letter sounds, blend the sounds and read the word. Encourage the child to reread the sentence for fluency and meaning. The child usually corrects his own mistakes because he never expected to read a word that cannot be sounded phonetically except for sight words.

Purpose

  • Increase reading for meaning.
  • Reinforce left to right directionality.
  • Promote reading fluency.
  • Introduce structure of simple sentences.

Variation

Leave a variety of Phrase strips on the shelf. Place it separately on the shelf to attract the children to it. Do not place them in a stack on the shelf. Change it frequently.
